If you haven’t started working through some keyword research for your business, now is the time to start. If you’re just getting started, take a look at our guide to Keyword Research for Beginners!

Keyword research will help you create the right kind of content for your website. You can write your service pages with a focus on the terms that people are searching for, and by doing so, you’ll be telling search engines that you are providing the content that searchers want to see.

Finding Keyword Phrases in Search Results

There are tons of options available online for keyword research, but one of the easiest ways to get a grasp on what your audience is actually searching for is to simply dig into search results.

Start by searching for some of your highly competitive terms. Let’s use the example of a pizza restaurant in the Denver area. If you search “pizza denver” you get a lot of information from the search engine that you can use to help determine the right phrases to focus on. Let’s break down the type of results you’ll see in this search. First, you’ve got your local maps results:

Next up, you’ll see your normal search results- often called “organic search results.” This is where you may see some big name pizza chains, and articles from Yelp, Trip Advisor, or local publications about popular pizza places in Denver.

Now, if you scroll past that, you’ll see a section for “Searches related to pizza denver.” Here’s what that looks like:

This section is populated by what Google determines are related searches to what you initially typed in. They determine this information in a number of ways, including through information about what other searchers are typing in.

This is a great place to dig into. While you may think you know what people are searching for in your area, or what people are searching for in relation to your business, you might be surprised at what keyword phrases you see in the related search section. Maybe your focus wasn’t on vegan pizza options, but you do actually have some on the menu, and now you can tailor some of the content on your website around these terms.

To go one step further, you can actually click on these related terms to see what those search results come up with, and continue down the rabbit hole to build up your list.

Know your Audience

Taking the time to work through keyword research in a variety of ways will help you better understand your target audience, no matter what industry you’re in. And even further, figuring out what problems you are solving for your potential customers can make all the difference in determining how to tailor your website, and where to spend your time!
